New Economy releases its monthly Unemployment Monitor. Figures show that the JSA claimant level has fallen by only 121 this month – around 0.2%.

Job queue remains stationary

Figures released today show that unemployment remained broadly static across Greater Manchester. The fall in unemployment has slowed compared to the first half of the year. The number of jobseeker’s allowance claimants in Greater Manchester fell by just 121 to 74,325 in June 2010 – a fall of only 0.2% on June’s figures.

The July 2010 Manchester Monitor is released. The report finds that Greater Manchester’s economy appears in better health than last month, but that the twin challenges of oublic sector cuts and public sector restructuring remain.

Positive news as job queues shorten for fifth month in a row

Figures released today show that job queues shortened in all districts across Greater Manchester last month, the fifth successive month that unemployment has fallen across the area, and continued good news for the local economy.

The Vision of the plan is that “By 2015 Greater Manchester has established itself as a world leader in the transformation to a low carbon economy.” Analysis indicates that by 2015 Greater Manchester Low Carbon Economic Area for the built environment could
Deliver up to £650 million additional to the Gross Value Added of the economy
Support 34,800 jobs, including 18,000 in the supply chain
Benefit the UK through developing and sharing best practice, as well as economic spill-over benefits
Save 6 million tonnes of carbon from existing buildings

New Economy research released on attracting and retaining innovative entrepreneurs

A report released today, carried out by New Economy for the North West Regional Development Agency (NWDA), finds that Manchester would be better at attracting and retaining innovative entrepreneurs if it improved its image in other parts of the UK, and was better able to connect its large base of talented residents with successful small and medium sized businesses.

Unemployment unexpectedly falls in Greater Manchester

Official figures released on 21st April 2010 show that unemployment continued to fall in Greater Manchester last month. The number of jobseeker’s allowance claimants in Greater Manchester fell by 2,322 to 82,300 in March 2010. This is a fall of 2.7% on last month, but the figure remains 8.1% up on last year.

Thinking New Economy Briefing on Public Sector Employment Released

Briefing explores the role of public sector employment in Greater Manchester’s economy and implications of fiscal contraction in the comings years. It finds Greater Manchester is better placed than any city region outside of London, to cope with this contraction due to its high percentage of jobs in the private sector – indicative of a strong business base. But also notes that job growth over the last 10 years has had a significant public sector component, suggesting that public sector fiscal contraction could still be an issue for the city region. This raises several important policy implications for Greater Manchester which are explored in more detail in the briefing.

1000th Young Person Starts Work Thanks to Future Jobs Fund

Figures released today by the Commission for the New Economy show that as part of the Future Jobs Fund initiative 1000 young people have now found employment and started working in new jobs created specifically to give young people an opportunity.

Health Commission Backs ‘Fit for Work’ Scheme

The Greater Manchester Health Commission has backed proposals which will keep people in work. Around one in ten Greater Manchester residents of working age are not able to work because of their health, costing around £1.4 billion in benefit payments and lost taxes annually. But employment is important for a healthy lifestyle.

Unemployment unexpectedly falls in Greater Manchester

Figures released today show that unemployment unexpectedly fell in Greater Manchester last month. The number of jobseeker’s allowance claimants in Greater Manchester fell by 398 to 84,622 in February 2010. This is a fall of 0.5% on last month, but the figure is still 16.3% up on last year.

Greater Manchester Shows Green Growth

The value of Greater Manchester’s environmental, low carbon and renewable energy sectors grew by over 4% between 2007/8 and 2008/9 despite the difficult economic conditions in the UK, delegates to a conference on the region’s Low Carbon Economic Area for the Built Environment heard today.
These Low Carbon Economic Growth Sector industries make up around £4.2 billion of Greater Manchester’s market value, employing 34,120 people across 1,893 companies, according to a report by Innovas Solutions commissioned by Manchester’s Commission for the New Economy.

The Rt Hon Ed Miliband MP, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change visits Manchester to launch Manchester’s SMARTER project in the Northern Quarter. The Project will pave the way for businesses and residential properties to save money and reduce their carbon footprint and will establish the country’s first smart energy business district.
