A mixed picture for Greater Manchester in April 2011

06/04/2011

New Economy today released the latest edition of the Manchester Monitor, which provides an analytical snapshot of the economic wellbeing of Greater Manchester.

New Economy warns that, after a relatively robust start to 2011, the latest business indicators suggest that growth is starting to stall. Coupled with rising global oil prices, international uncertainty over the impact of the Japanese earthquake, and the prospect of an imminent increase in the Eurozone interest rate (which, alongside persistently high inflation, will put pressure on the Bank of England to increase the UK base rate), New Economy’s research suggests that the prospect of a prolonged slowdown has markedly increased.

Budget 2011 briefing released

24/03/2011

New Economy has today released a new thinking: new economy briefing on Budget 2011 and the ‘Plan for Growth’ released by the Government. Budget 2011 was released on 23rd March 2011 and sets out Government spending plans for the year ahead. It builds on action announced in the Spending Review 2010 and the Emergency Budget last June to rebalance the economy from unsustainable public spending towards exports and investment. The Government’s ‘Plan for Growth’, published alongside the Budget, sets out a package of measures to support private sector investment, enterprise and innovation. This briefing summarises the key announcements from both papers that are of interest and importance to Greater Manchester as we seek to grow our economy. The key announcements are summarised and are grouped under the four headings of the ‘Plan for Growth’ paper.
