Britain’s Superfast Broadband Future

As part of its overarching Growth Review, the Government has set out its vision for superfast broadband in the UK with the strategy document “Britain’s Superfast Broadband Future”. This thinking: new economy briefing provides an analysis of the report, looking at the UK’s current position, its future broadband strategy, the Government’s growth proposals, the role of the private sector, and Greater Manchester’s position within this.

Private Sector confidence returning to Greater Manchester

The latest Working Paper, released today, 15th December 2010, focuses on mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and corporate finance activity in Greater Manchester and suggests that levels of investment and investor confidence in Greater Manchester have begun to grow over the last year at a relatively strong rate after the rapid decline associated with the 2008/09 financial crisis.

Small increase in claimant numbers, but more job opportunities

Figures released today show that unemployment increased marginally across Greater Manchester. However, claimant numbers traditionally rise in August due to the impact of school leavers, and the claimant figures are lower than this time last year.

Job queue remains stationary
11/08/2010
Figures released today show that unemployment remained broadly static across Greater Manchester. The fall in unemployment has slowed compared to the first half of the year. The number of jobseeker’s allowance claimants in Greater Manchester fell by just 121 to 74,325 in June 2010 – a fall of only 0.2% on June’s figures.

Positive news as job queues shorten for fifth month in a row

Figures released today show that job queues shortened in all districts across Greater Manchester last month, the fifth successive month that unemployment has fallen across the area, and continued good news for the local economy.

A report released today, carried out by New Economy for the North West Regional Development Agency (NWDA), finds that Manchester would be better at attracting and retaining innovative entrepreneurs if it improved its image in other parts of the UK, and was better able to connect its large base of talented residents with successful small and medium sized businesses.

Thinking New Economy Briefing on Public Sector Employment Released

Briefing explores the role of public sector employment in Greater Manchester’s economy and implications of fiscal contraction in the comings years. It finds Greater Manchester is better placed than any city region outside of London, to cope with this contraction due to its high percentage of jobs in the private sector – indicative of a strong business base. But also notes that job growth over the last 10 years has had a significant public sector component, suggesting that public sector fiscal contraction could still be an issue for the city region. This raises several important policy implications for Greater Manchester which are explored in more detail in the briefing.

Unemployment unexpectedly falls in Greater Manchester

Official figures released on 21st April 2010 show that unemployment continued to fall in Greater Manchester last month. The number of jobseeker’s allowance claimants in Greater Manchester fell by 2,322 to 82,300 in March 2010. This is a fall of 2.7% on last month, but the figure remains 8.1% up on last year.

Health Commission Backs ‘Fit for Work’ Scheme

The Greater Manchester Health Commission has backed proposals which will keep people in work. Around one in ten Greater Manchester residents of working age are not able to work because of their health, costing around £1.4 billion in benefit payments and lost taxes annually. But employment is important for a healthy lifestyle.

Unemployment unexpectedly falls in Greater Manchester

Figures released today show that unemployment unexpectedly fell in Greater Manchester last month. The number of jobseeker’s allowance claimants in Greater Manchester fell by 398 to 84,622 in February 2010. This is a fall of 0.5% on last month, but the figure is still 16.3% up on last year.

Greater Manchester Shows Green Growth

The value of Greater Manchester’s environmental, low carbon and renewable energy sectors grew by over 4% between 2007/8 and 2008/9 despite the difficult economic conditions in the UK, delegates to a conference on the region’s Low Carbon Economic Area for the Built Environment heard today.
These Low Carbon Economic Growth Sector industries make up around £4.2 billion of Greater Manchester’s market value, employing 34,120 people across 1,893 companies, according to a report by Innovas Solutions commissioned by Manchester’s Commission for the New Economy.

Greater Manchester’s Commission for the New Economy working jointly with the Environment Commission wish to procure consultancy services to help develop our feasibility work relating to recent designation as the UK’s first Low Carbon Economic Area for the Built Environment. State of the Manchester City Region Debate

New Economy has recently been collaborating with the University of Manchester to organise a public debate and discussion giving the citizens of the city region an opportunity to have their say on the big issues it faces. Sponsored by the Brooks World Poverty Institute, this event will be held on January 12th 2010 and will feature a range of speakers with both a local and national profile.
Mike Emmerich, chief executive of New Economy will be there to talk about the future of the Manchester City Region in the context of the on-going economic crisis and the run up to a national election.
