Low Carbon Skills
Event held on 7th July 2011 hosted by Oldham College
The event was held to bring together GM’s strategic skills and training providers with employers within the low carbon environmental goods and services sector with a view to develop a cohesive understanding of demand and of current and planned provision of low carbon skill training, based on demand, including that to be generated by GM’s strategic climate change work.
To gain a perspective as to what we need to do next to prepare ourselves for the low carbon economy in terms of skills provision.

Wigan Low Carbon Skills Study
New research into low carbon skills in Wigan
The Commission for the New Economy working in partnership with Wigan Council has commissioned independent researchers, Pye Tait Consulting, to carry out a detailed study of low carbon skills in Wigan. This pioneering research will capitalise on existing intelligence relating to low carbon goods and services by exploring and identifying drivers of future change, the skills needed by employers in Wigan to respond to these changes, and the opportunities the low carbon economy presents for the existing workforce and those outside of the labour market in Wigan.
The research will establish the size and shape of low carbon employment in Wigan, and provide analysis of existing training provision to identify gaps relating to low carbon skills. It will also identify barriers that may currently be experienced by employers in accessing low carbon training.
Pye Tait will be undertaking in-depth interviews with a range of low carbon sector stakeholders, followed by a survey of employers and training providers in the Wigan region. They are due to submit their final report to New Economy in the autumn.
