Government gives go ahead to Greater Manchester’s Local Enterprise Partnership
Issued on behalf of the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities
The Government today announced that Greater Manchester’s proposals for a business-led Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) for the area had been successful.
LEP’s are designed to support business and local authorities to grow the local private sector, tackle major barriers to growth and develop shared strategies for the local economy to increase job creation.
Greater Manchester will now form a Shadow LEP to create an immediate focus for AGMA and business to develop and shape in detail the LEP’s functions and to oversee the implementation of delivery arrangements.
Lord Peter Smith the Chair of AGMA said: " We are pleased that our bid has been successful. The LEP will build on our track record of proven success in developing partnership arrangements with business as we strive to continue to create the right conditions for continued economic growth in what will be a very challenging time given the scale of cuts to public services in Manchester. We need to maximise our share of available public resources for investment because our economic success is important for the nation as well as all those who live and work here. And we need to invest what’s available to deliver the very best economic outcomes. Our LEP will help us do this."
John Early who chairs Greater Manchester’s Business Leadership Council and who will chair the Shadow LEP said: " We want to start work right away and ensure that we have the best possible functional base to make a real difference; we see our new partnership exercising more influence, if not control, over inward investment and business support; ensure skills and employment, planning, housing and transport policies are properly co-ordinated and focussed upon the specific needs of Greater Manchester. Today’s announcement is a step forward in this direction."
Over the next few months there will be an open recruitment process before the permanent LEP becomes operational next April. Details of this process will be announced shortly.
